The Baltic countries are fully ready to synchronise with the continental European electricity grid in February next year. This was stated today in Jurmala, Latvia, by Dainius Kreivys, Kaspars Melnis and Kristen Michal, the ministers in charge of energy of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The Ministers discussed the progress of key synchronisation projects and final preparations.
After assessing the progress report, the ministers stated, that preparations for the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity system are progressing according to the plan. In the upcoming weeks, the Baltic Transmission System Operators will inform other parties of their joint decision not to renew the BRELL contract and to withdraw from the UPS system. After the non-renewal of the BRELL contract, the Baltic countries will run and isolated system work test and synchronize with the continental European grids in February 2025.
The documents establishing this agreement were signed by the Baltic Prime Ministers and the TSOs a year ago.
The Baltic countries have been consistently preparing for this step. Baltic ministers in charge of energy stated unitedly “we welcome our unity in pursuing our common energy security goals and implementing the projects according to the plan”.
The progress on the development of the National Energy and Climate Plan in each Baltic state was presented in the second part of the meeting, while discussing ways to promote renewable energy in the Baltics. The Baltic energy policy goals for 2040, infrastructure resilience and potential regulatory changes for the operation of the Incukalns underground gas storage facility were outlined in a joint meeting as well.
Baltic Ministers meet regularly each year to ensure one dialogue on common Baltic challenges, especially in the light of energy security and growing role of renewable energy.
