Žygimantas Vaičiūnas Takes Office as Minister for Energy
On 12 December, Žygimantas Vaičiūnas will take up his duties as Head of the Ministry of Energy, having been sworn in at the Seimas alongside the other members of the new Government.
“We have important things to do – we need to focus on energy projects and consumers. The smooth completion of strategic energy projects, the strengthening of energy independence, the development of renewable energy, the resilience, reliability and flexibility of electricity grids, and the protection of the interests of energy consumers are the most important areas of work that will need to be taken up without delay,” said Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.
Priorities include the development of renewable energy, the smooth synchronisation of the Baltic electricity grids with those of continental Europe, and the protection of energy infrastructure. Emphasis will be placed on green energy, the sustainability and flexibility of electricity grids, and the development of a flexible electricity storage ecosystem. It will aim to ensure competitive heat prices for all, and the ability to switch quickly and smoothly between independent electricity suppliers.
Žygimantas Vaičiūnas has more than 20 years of experience in the national and EU energy sector, having served as Minister of Energy in 2016-2020 and as Lithuania’s Energy Representative to the EU in 2014-2016. Most recently, he has worked as Policy Director at the European Solar Manufacturing Council and as a Board Member of the Global BOD Group, and has provided consultancy services to the European Commission’s energy structures.
