New Minister of Energy Lukas Savickas takes office

Following his swearing-in at the Seimas, Lukas Savickas has assumed leadership of the Ministry of Energy.
‘I am stepping into the role of minister with the belief that the time has come for a new level of ambition in Lithuania’s energy sector. We have already achieved energy independence – now we must not only safeguard what we have accomplished, but also turn the energy sector into a competitive advantage for Lithuania. This will be the strategic objective of my term in office,’ said Mr Savickas.
According to him, this means that the Ministry will strive to ensure that energy creates greater value for people, that a competitive energy sector boosts Lithuania’s economic competitiveness, and that energy infrastructure functions reliably during crises.
The priorities include making Lithuania a net electricity exporter by 2028 and achieving a positive balance in the value of electricity imports and exports from 2032. The minister will also focus on ensuring a transparent and fair electricity market for consumers; contributing directly to a more favourable environment for investors; further strengthening the transatlantic partnership with the United States of America; and implementing regional infrastructure projects, including the Harmony Link overland interconnector with Poland and a submarine power cable with Germany.
From 2024 to 2025, Lukas Savickas served as Minister of the Economy and Innovation of the Republic of Lithuania. Mr Savickas is in his second consecutive term as a Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. In parliament, he has served on the Committees on Economics, Environmental Protection, Human Rights and European Affairs, and as Deputy Chair of the Committee for the Future. From 2019 to 2020, he was a member of the Vilnius City Municipal Council. In the Seventeenth Government of the Republic of Lithuania, he served as Adviser to the Prime Minister on economic affairs and strategic change management before becoming First Deputy Chancellor of the Government. Prior to that, he held senior positions at Investors’ Forum and Invest Lithuania.
Mr Savickas has also participated in a range of international and public initiatives. He was a member of the State Progress Council, an Atlantic Council Millennium fellow, president and one of the founders of the Create for Lithuania Alumni Association, and a member of the Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.
Mr Savickas studied Politics and International Relations at the University of York in the United Kingdom and European Public Affairs at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
