Lithuania’s statement at the IAEA Board of Governors echoes nuclear safety questions in Belarus
At the IAEA Board of Governors, which is taking place 7-11 March 2022 in Vienna, Austria, Lithuanian delegation echoed remaining nuclear safety problems in the Belarussian nuclear power plant.
In light of recent unprecedented Russian aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine and its nuclear reactors, Lithuania expressed its unconditional support to Ukraine, condemned the Russian invasion and also called for international community to awake and take stock of the Lithuania’s long-lasting concerns on remaining nuclear safety problems in the Russian built nuclear facility in Belarus.
“Systemic violations of the international nuclear and environmental safety standards, low work and safety culture and lack in transparency throughout the development of the Belarussian project cannot be ignored”, said in her statement Ms. Lina Sabaitiene, Nuclear Energy Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania. She called upon the member states to support Lithuania’s position that the highest nuclear safety requirements must be immediately implemented in the Belarussian NPP and that the nuclear power plant, built in violation of the international nuclear safety standards, shall not be in operation.
