Kreivys after meetings in Warsaw: “Ensuring energy security is now more important than ever”
In the face of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, ensuring energy security in the region is more important than ever, says Minister of Energy Dainius Kreivys.
“Now that Russia has launched military action against Ukraine, the countries in our region need to prepare for all possible scenarios. Poland is one of our most important strategic partners in all areas – especially in energy – so working together with our Polish colleagues to guarantee the energy security of our countries is crucial,” said the Minister of Energy.
Minister Kreivys met with Polish Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa and Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure Piotr Naimski in Warsaw on Thursday to discuss the energy security situation in the region, progress on synchronisation of the Baltic States with the continental European network, cooperation in the natural gas sector, and renewable energy projects in Lithuania and Poland.
The minister stated that Lithuania and Poland are prepared for all possible crisis situations in the energy sector: “We have been monitoring the situation for some time and are prepared for a variety of scenarios. We understand the key role of energy in the economy and in people’s daily lives, so my Polish colleagues and I had a detailed discussion on joint actions to ensure smooth operation of the energy systems. Meanwhile, the Baltic synchronisation project, which is being implemented through Poland, should gain new momentum in view of the current situation.”
Poland is one of Lithuania’s most important strategic energy partners. Part of the bilateral cooperation projects has already been successfully implemented – synchronisation of the Baltic electricity networks with the continental European network has been tested, and the Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania (GIPL) project is planned to be competed in 2022.
