Energy Minister Meets with European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen
On February 10, Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas met with European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jorgensen. During the meeting, they discussed strategic energy projects, the European Commission’s agenda, and opportunities for financial support.
Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas highlighted the successful synchronization of the Baltic States’ electricity system with the Continental European grid following the disconnection from the IPS/UPS system and a successful isolated operation test. He emphasized the shared responsibility to ensure the smooth and successful operation of this system in synchronous mode with continental Europe. Other priorities include effectively implementing the Harmony Link interconnection project, enhancing the protection and resilience of energy infrastructure, ensuring secure electricity supply, expanding the integration of the Baltic States’ electricity markets, and creating opportunities for further development of renewable energy sources.
The protection of energy infrastructure remains a top priority, especially with increasing hybrid threats and cross-border infrastructure violations in the region. The electricity transmission system operators of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have been tasked with preparing a comprehensive set of measures to ensure the security of energy infrastructure.
Another important topic discussed was the European Union's financial support for the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, which is both an ongoing EU commitment and an opportunity for the EU nuclear energy industry.
The meeting also addressed Lithuania’s firm stance on the EU taking strict measures to completely eliminate imports of Russian energy resources. Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas noted that Lithuania's success in developing LNG and electricity infrastructure and diversifying supply sources demonstrates that energy independence is achievable through swift and decisive political decisions.
Looking ahead, Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas presented projections that Lithuania could become an electricity exporter post-2030, with renewable energy sources in electricity production increasing 2.5 times by 2030 and four times by 2040.
