Mandatory international peer review of the national framework, competent regulatory authority and national programme is provided in the Council Directive 2011/70/Euratom, establishing a Community framework for the responsible and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, and in the Law on Radioactive Waste Management of the Republic of Lithuania.

Taking into account the provisions of the Directive and the Law in May of 2022, an international peer review of the national framework, competent regulatory authority and national programme was carried out by the ARTEMIS (Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation) mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). During the ARTEMIS mission, the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel and the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant were evaluated. Independent experts from Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Finland and Germany participated in the mission.
