Vilnius will be the centre of discussions about energy security in Central and Eastern Europe

On 7 October, Vilnius will host high-level energy security forum of the United States of America (USA) and Europe to deal with urgent matters of transatlantic cooperation in energy field. The Forum of Ministers will be attended by US Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Ministers of Energy and energy policymakers from Central and Eastern Europe.

The second meeting of the partnership for transatlantic energy cooperation (P-TEC) will be devoted to energy security challenges faced in the region and specific measures to strengthen involvement of the US government and private sector in dealing with energy security challenges of the regions, possibilities to improve the existing investment environment and to attract new investors to Central and Eastern Europe.

'The transatlantic partnership plays important role in the context of geopolitical changes and energy security challenges. It is gratifying that we will have an opportunity in Lithuania to discuss specific directions and practical instruments for strengthening the US role to contribute to assurance of energy security and competitiveness in our region', said Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.

Ministers will discuss urgent matters of energy security, such as: synchronisation of the Baltic States with the continental Europe networks, strengthening of cyber security of critical energy infrastructure, diversification of natural gas import, import and development of liquefied natural gas in the region.

Discussion on the nuclear safety in the region will be held at the forum. Responding to the current trends of transit to green energy and necessity to reduce climate change, development and integration of renewable energy and measures for improving effectiveness of energy consumption will be discussed.

The forum will be organised implementing the initiative of US Energy Secretary Rick Perry to increase governmental and private support of US companies to energy projects implemented in Central and Eastern Europe.

The first P-TEC forum attracting lots of attention was held on 13-15 of March 2019, in Houston (USA). The initiative of transatlantic energy cooperation was announced on 18 September 2018, at the meeting of the Three Seas Initiative, in Bucharest.

The forum at ministerial level on transatlantic energy cooperation will be organised on the 7th of October, in Vilnius, in cooperation of the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and US Energy Department. The patron of the event is President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda.

The attendees of the forum will be greeted by Gitanas Nausėda, President of the Republic of Lithuania and Linas Linkevičius, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

Keynote remarks will be given by Rick Perry, Secretary of Energy of the United States of America, Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania, and Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General for Energy, European Commission.
