Heat sector

Overview

Fundamental restructuring of the Lithuanian heat sector began in 1997. The heat sector was detached from Lietuvos energija, UAB (“Lietuvos energija”) divided into independent companies and transferred to the municipalities. Management and regulation of the heat sector also changed: the municipalities which took over the heating company shares that had belonged to the state acquired the right to independently manage these companies. At the same time, the municipalities also assumed responsibility for the companies’ operating results.

  • Lithuania’s annual heat production is approximately 9,400 GWh;
  • Installed thermal power capacity makes up approximately  9,920 MW;
  • In Lithuanian cities, approximately 72 % of residential space is heated via centralized heating systems.
